Cowboy Art Prints

I sourced these public domain cowboy art prints to decorate a western nursery for my youngest child. I wanted a subtle western theme, so adding cowboy prints along with western prints of landscapes were the obvious choice.

These cowboy prints were created by two different artists in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Two of these art prints are Charles Russell prints. The other two are Frederic Remington prints. Both artists are known for their iconic artwork of the American Old West.

A Bad Hoss, 1904 by Charles Russell

This is the signature cowboy art print. The bucking horse, the red handkerchief, the flying hat, the clouds of dust. All tell the story of a classic cowboy hard at work. This one is my personal favorite for our western nursery.

The Buckaroos, 1902 by Charles Russell

This print showcases a cowboy on a horse roping a steer with his lasso. The original print shows two cowboys. It has been cropped to fit an 8×10 frame.

The Lookout, 1887 by Frederic Remington

This cowboy stands as a lookout on a rocky path facing a valley.

I love of the colors and motion of this print. The cowboy is swiftly descending a steep hillside on his horse. You can almost feel the movement when looking at this western print.

Tips for Printing

  • Check your printer. Make sure your printer is full of colored ink if printing at home to avoid discoloration or streaking.
  • Choose your paper. Use card stock or thicker paper to create more sturdy prints. Regular computer paper is fine too but using thicker paper will create an elevated look.
  • Leave the scale as is. Don’t adjust the scale of the PDF when printing, meaning let it print at full size to get an 8×10 image.
  • Make it matted. If you DO want to make the image smaller and have a boarder around it (a print in this style is called mat) you can adjust the scale of the image when printing.
  • Let it dry. Avoid touching the printed image and set it aside to let the ink fully dry before framing.
  • Take it to the experts. If you’re unsure of how to print at home or don’t have a printer, you can always print the wall art at a local print shop or office supply store. Call ahead or look online to get instructions in their process.

  1. What a fun theme!

I’d love to decorate our boys’ room but we spend so much time on outdoor projects that the inside spaces are often relegated to the bottom of the list!
You’ve inspired me to at least freshen up their bedroom though!

  2. My brother would LOVE these prints for his house! He rides bulls in his local rodeos and around the midwest. Thanks for sharing
